2013-M01 "Oh My ..........!" Mystery

Welcome to our first Cottage Mystery for 2013.

I will be your host, and should you have any difficulty, please don’t hesitate to ask for help or clarification within this thread.

All questions and suggestions are welcome, no matter how trivial it may seem at the time. Don’t forget, we were all beginners once, and I will be the first to say, while I know a lot, I don’t know it all!

Patchwork is all about sharing and friendship and it is hoped that we can all learn something from each other. Those with more experience are encouraged to share their knowledge within the mystery thread.

Mystery Name: “Oh My ………………………!”
Skill Level: Easy …… but interesting
Techniques: Half Square Triangles
Project Finished Size: 43” sq quilt (including borders and binding)

This is a very versatile design which uses 3 fabrics and it could be made into a small lap quilt for a male or female of any age, a baby’s play mat or a table topper, depending on the fabrics/colours chosen. You might say it is a quilt for everyone?

Progress photos of chosen fabrics, blocks and finished tops can be added to the Mystery Gallery for all to see and comment upon.

There will be two small prizes on offer for this mystery:
One for the first participant who correctly names the mystery block.
One for the first participant to fully complete their project and upload a picture in the mystery gallery, but it must be bound and fully quilted to be a winner.

The mystery instructions will be presented in weekly PDF instalments each Friday.

22 Mar 2013: Instalment 8: The BIG REVEAL and instructions to complete the quilt.

3 fabrics - how much of each fabric and are they similar fabrics / colours or contrasts.

In other words do I already have enough fabric!!!!!!

I take it this is a 'real' ....... lol............... sane quilt?????

I am thinking about it

I was going to think about it....but... no time for that, lol, sign me up!

Well I can have enough fabric and I don't want to buy any more ..............

Now if it were threads you were talking about that is a different thing all together.

And I don't want to spend money on fabric that I could spend on threads now - do I ??????

Anyway count me in and I will see how I go.

good thing is ... there is not really a deadline to finish .. unless you are like me and want the prizes ... heeeheeee

hahaha Wendy, I would suggest you can probably assume 45 inches divided by 3 fabrics, maybe need around 25cm of each colour.
Even can be 3 colours but 9 fabrics, I am guessing? ooohhh the possibilities.

i am hoping to get this out of what i have ... and trust me i dont have a lot of 'spare' fabric anymore ... most of it is earmarked for other quilts ..... but i do have a few bits that are not ... so i am hoping i have something available as i am just NOT ALLOWED to buy anymore ... well at the moment i ain't cos ... i have all my tubs full ... if i can unload some by making something else i shall be fine ....

I missed the bit where it said the fabrics were all used equally. I thought maybe one fabric with small bits of other colours. Been in to crazy quilting and now art quilts too long it seems ..........

REMEMBER EVERYONE - SPEND TODAY BACKING UP TOUR COMPUTER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh and if you have an old computer - in my case a VERY slow pc - then crank it up occassionally and keep it up dated.

And don't forget Spotties is only about $7 postage and I don't think that is too bad .............

Wendy, your are right......... one main fabric, one contrast fabric and one accent fabric.

About the prizes.......... and the time zones......... will have to think about that some more............ watch this space.

not 25cm.......... at all.... hmmm..... 35cm?

Hmmmm? That is a little closer Karen, but what about adding a little extra to that too for seam allowances, borders and bindings etc?

Any way, not long now and everyone will have their first set of instructions to start getting their fabrics together. That will take all the guess work out it then won't it.

OK, I am going to make my grandson his quilt.........he likes motorbikes so hoping it is going to be suitable, lol. So far, 5 of the girls have bed size quilts..... 1 to go. Only Hayden has a quilt (of the boys), so 2 to go.......

It is a very versatile pattern Karen and will look great for a little boy, depending on your colours/fabrics chosen of course. I have given lots of hints and tips for fabric selection in the Purchases PDF to help everyone with choices. Just one question though Karen, will a 1 mt sq be big enough? You may like to consider making it bigger later with extra blocks and borders? There are so many possibilities............ maybe even add a motorbike panel?

You will be happy to know I am emailing all the participant's their first PDF tonight for the Fabric Purchases. So Jen, you will probably be the first one to actually read it as the rest of us over here should be in bed asleep!!! Enjoy!

If everyone could read it through and come back in here and discuss some of the following questions, it might help others decide what they will do as well?

These questions are always a good place to start planning any new quilt.
Who will you make your quilt for?
Where will they use it?
What colour/theme will you be looking for?
What type of wadding/batting will you use and why?
What type of quilting do you usually favor and why?

Now.... let the Mystery BEGIN and LETS HAVE SOME FUN!!!

I am off to look for fabrics today cos I really really can't spare the time to look and see what I have but am thinking this is an opportunity to make the smiley boys quilt with motorbike fabric........

Well you won't believe my tale of woe - but here goes.

House is still in a state of chaos thanks to the electrical company not coming to change over my street power so the sparky can finsh.

Furniture in places it shouldn't be. But mamaged to get 2 hims the other week to shift a very heavy cupboard into the passage out of the car port.

BUT no one thought to look up - and see my drop down ladder into my fabric stash and now I can't get up there.

One him is holidaying in Hong Kong - iike all poor people do with the family in schoo;l holidays -so hopefully other Him and I can shift it along this weekend.

Coz I am not buying any more........... if I can't get up there then it may well not be done in cotton......
