January / February 2014 Blocks

These blocks were the ones Lorna has chosen for the start up blocks ...

Come on ladies ... lets get going .... 2014 is going to be a great year for quilting ... 


and this is how the following months block will be chosen ... 

The block for March etc ... will be the choice of the lady who posts the first photo of her finished block for the current month. If the name of a block has not been posted by the last day of that month Lorna will have another one ready for us to do ...

yes T ..  here is good ... sort of keep everything in the same month with the same block ... 

sort of makes sense in my head ...

ok ... i have cut out my fabrics ... they are ready for me to start sewing them tomorrow if i feel motivated enough to do them ... 

i also put pics of my chopped up bits in the gallery ... maybe that too will help me get to and do them ... lol ...

Mine will not be getting done for a few days. Today we are doing MIL's shopping, Greg has heart specialist appiontment, then we are picking Jensen up as we are having him over night while his parents have a night out. Tomorrow Greg is heading back up bush for work, then I will take Jensen home and wait for his patents to come home as they are staying in a boutique hotel for the night. Friday i have a funeral of a good friend who had an asthma attack while out to lunch which resulted in two attacks and a stroke, she was 51. So very sad she has two teenage girls and a hubby. Life is so unexpected. So maybe over the weekend I will do mine.

I am sorry to hear of the loss of your friend Tarnyia. Life is as you say so very unexpected and we have to be grateful for every day we are given. Enjoy you sleepover visit with the little man.
 

I am still thinking about joining here. Might have to play 'catch up' if I do. 
It is very busy here at the moment and will be for a few weeks to come, but I will follow the thread and if I make the blocks will post them in the gallery. 

Thanks Lorna for the suggestion and it looks like a lot of fun. Wondering now what colour scheme everyone will use so I am off to the gallery now to check out Bobbie's bits and pieces...........

Bobbie those were the first colours I thought of using if I joined!
Of course - I would have to go shopping for them too! ha ha

Actually, I was thinking of making the whole quilt in the colours of your Feb block, not just the one block, but all of them (past and future). Hmmmmmmmmm wonder how much fabric I would need for that now, plus sashing and borders etc.......?

what a tragic thing .. and so young too .. you are so right .. life is very unexpected .... and so very cruel at times ... big hugs hun ... 

and the rest of your week seems very planned too ... and full .... not too sure what a boutique hotel is .. but sounds interesting ...

i may not get my blocks done before the weekend either ... i am still trying to find spots to put things ... i do know one thing though ... i like having room to move when i sew ... the bus was good ... this is just better ....

and Evelyn ... it will be easy enough to play catch up as each month will have its own thread ... separating them will make it much easier to follow too me thinks ... 

and as for colour scheme ... i don't have one ... not sure how much fabric i am going to need for all of this .. so i am going scrappy ... now if everything sort of ends up blending .. even better ... but i know the kids won't mind what a warm quilt looks like when they want to snuggle in front of the telly .. oh ... and neither would i for that matter ... haha ...

i have a huge amount of reds and blues .. but they are already earmarked for a 9 patch quilt i have been working on .. forever .... haha ... 

i was very tempted to pull all of them out last night and put them in a separate tub for this .. but ... it took so long to gather them all up ... so i will be keeping them ... 


well... what i could do is ............... cut out all the 9 patch blocks i need and then just see what is left over .... that might work too ... means i would have to do the january one again ... cos it has pink in it ... ... we'll see .. i have some time before i start ... 

maybe ...

not sure how much fabric you would need ... but there will be 12 blocks ... all 12 inch ... and maybe if you said a fat 1/4 for each block ... then use your quilt program to work out the sashing and borders ... that would be easy enough .... 

i think a fat 1/4 would be way too much for each block really .. but would give you a good safety margin ... so maybe ... 5 red .. 5 blue .. and 2 white/cream/background ... 

i now have to go and work out the sashing and borders ... drat my OCD and ADD .. my brain just won't let stuff go .. until of course the ADD steps in and everything flies out the window and a whole new lot of thoughts pop in ..... oh man .. you should try being inside my head for 5 minutes ... it would send a totally sane person crazy in about the first 3 minutes .. the other 2 minutes are just for the fun of it all ...

It is raining here as you know and I am humming......... "Singing in the Rain, just singing in the rain. what a glorious feeling, I'm happy again!"! ha ha Bet you are now too - humming and singing and happy?
 

it is raining here today too ... not hard or anything .. but every now and then a little bit of wet stuff from the sky ... really nice ... 

now ... i have some rough figures here ... 

i am not going to be held accountable for these figures either .. they are just an estimated amount ... 

for 12 x 12inch blocks you will need ... approximately ... 1.5 yards of fabric .. broken up into 3 or 4 co-ordinating fabrics for the blocks ...


sashing ... 1.5 inches .. including a sash strip on the outside of all the blocks ... 3/4 yard ... 


1st border ... 3 inches wide will need ... 1 yard of fabric ... 


2nd border ... 6 inches wide will need ... 2 yards of fabric ... 


binding ... cut 2.5 inches will need 1 yard of fabric ... 


finished size of this quilt top will be 60 x 74 inches .. 





of course you can adjust your borders ... add or subtract them ... whatever you would like ...

now that is done .. i will go and do some sewing ...

Bobby, I just saw your Jan. and Feb. blocks, good job, real nice, so you get to pick the one for March, or have you done that one also.  No need to post it too soon, first of March is great. My 2 first blocks are still a pile of pieces.  Will get to them in the morning, hugs Lorna  .
